Fixed prices and minimized environmental impact are
the cornerstones of the partnership between the Kalkal
Cooperative and several German organizations (Kalkal
means “precision work” in English). The
traditional leatherworking caste from northern Cameroon
recruits its members from Cameroon and the bordering
regions of Chad and Nigeria. Their traditional methods
of production, passed down through the generations,
still determine their methods and the precision of their
work. No chemical substances are used during the tanning
and coloring of their high-quality, leather products,
which means that water pollutions requirements are easily
fulfilled. All items produced are entirely hand-made.
Various companies have models developed to give as exclusive
gifts, for example – wallets, cases, calendar
covers and visiting card cases are made in series of
up to 200. The profits achieved in Germany are sent
back to support the cooperative’s investment funds.
